Information and support in one place.

Generally, the term facial paralysis or facial palsy (sometimes known as Bell’s palsy) refers to weakness of the cranial nerves which control the facial muscles. This results in the facial muscles not receiving the necessary signals in order to function properly affecting movement of part of the face such as eye(s), mouth and other areas. It can affect part of the face and in some cases both sides.

Birthing complications that can cause facial paralysis are:

  • Large baby size
  • The baby’s head presenting at a difficult angle or the baby has difficulty passing through the pelvis
  • Mother’s small pelvis or pressure from a bone in the pelvis
  • Forceps delivery, in rare cases, a forceps delivery can cause an injury to the facial nerve due to the pressure on the baby’s head.
